A ROAD safety campaigner is calling for 20mph zones to be extended throughout Inverclyde's housing estates.

Councillor Jim MacLeod wants to start with a section of the Port's Lilybank Road, which is in part of his ward.

His call was sparked after five drivers were caught speeding by police in the residential road.

Councillor MacLeod said: "I have had complaints from constituents about speeding which I have raised with council officials and the police.

"Council roads officials have informed me they are looking at traffic calming on Lilybank Road between the junctions of William Street and Birkmyre Avenue.

"I'm calling for 20mph zones as there are a lot of houses in Lilybank Road."

He also highlighted Gibshill Road, where the children's centre is located, as it is on a hill and a bend.

Councillor MacLeod who was knocked down in the Clune Brae when he was a child, has been a passionate campaigner for road safety since he was first elected as a councillor in 2007 and was elected to serve on the West of Scotland Road Safety Forum.

The forum wants more 20mph zones around housing estates to make roads and streets safer for children, older and disabled people.

He said: "I took the policy to heart, particularly having been knocked down as a child."

Mr MacLeod says traffic measures have not kept pace with the changing urban environment, as housing estates were built 70 years ago when there were hardly any cars on the road or parked vehicles.

He said: "That is why I believe we should see reduced speed limits in many of our housing estates. I believe it is simply not safe to drive any faster than 20mph in many of our housing estates."

A council spokesman said: “We are prioritising numerous locations across Inverclyde following assessment under our traffic calming policy.

“Road safety is an issue we take extremely seriously.

“Motorists should remember they should always drive in a manner that is appropriate for the road and weather conditions.”
