A PORT High pupil who finished third in the Great Scottish Run says she dreams of competing at the Olympics.

Abi Hammerman, 14, is a member of Inverclyde Athletic Club and has been running since she was nine.

The S3 pupil started running in P5 five at school after taking part in the cross country event.

She had to drop out and came in last but it simply spurred her on to succeed.

She has now competed in the 2.5k event at the Great Scottish event for five years and each time has managed to shave 45 seconds off her time.

Abi said: “I train four times a week and in the lead up to the run I trained with my dad, Jon, who also runs for Inverclyde Athletic Club.

“I was confident I could beat my time and I was hoping to be on the podium, but I saw some of the girls taking part and knew them many of them had beaten me in other events before.

“It’s the best I have ever done.

“I was so excited, I came in 11th place the year before so it was a big jump. I now have one year left in that age group and I hope to finish on a high and maybe get first.”

Abi, who will be kept busy with competitions for the next few weekends has aspirations of one day competing as part of Team GB.

She said: “I would love to represent Team GB and head to the Olympics, it has been my dream since I started running.

“I always watch it on television and my family are hoping to go to Tokyo 2020 to watch the athletics.

“My family would love to see me succeed, they are all so supportive and we are an active family.

“I really enjoy running and racing and aiming to get better.

"I like travelling all over Scotland for competitions and I have made some great friends."
