A GREENOCK school has gone to the top of the class after a positive report from inspectors.

Cedars School of Excellence in Ardgowan Square was praised for quality leadership and standard of teaching and learning.

The contribution of head teacher Alison Speirs, who is retiring after 19 years, was also recognised and inspectors praised strong and positive relationships between staff, pupils and parents.

Jennifer Jack, chairman of the board of governors for the school, said: ‘We are obviously delighted by both the content and quality of this inspection report and want to pay tribute to Alison Speirs for her leadership over the past 19 years.

"We look forward to the school’s continuing success under her successor Fraser Speirs in the years to come."

The school’s board was highlighted as a strong support along with its international leadership in technology.

In 2010, Cedars became the first school in the world to give all pupils an iPad.

Cedars has since hosted visits from schools as far away as Japan and the United States as well as many European countries and South Africa in order to share good practice.

The inspectors said: “Children and young people are making outstanding use of a range of digital technology to enrich and facilitate their learning.”

“Across the primary and secondary stages, children and young people are highly motivated in their learning.

"They are dedicated to making the best possible progress.

"Children and young people enjoy exceptionally positive relationships with staff.”.

New initiatives that have been developed by the school - such as Welly Wednesday, an outdoor learning programme for P1 - 3, were praised too.

The school is owned and operated by Struthers Memorial Church, a registered Scottish charity.
