A DIAMOND couple from Port Glasgow are still sparkling after 60 years together.

Netta and Robert Swan tied the knot on October 17 in 1958 and have just celebrated their milestone anniversary.

It was love at first sight for Netta, 79, who was only 16 when she met Robert at the Britannia Club in Greenock's Terrace Road.

She said: "It was love at first sight.

"I liked his curly hair - I thought 'he's the man for me'."

Robert, 85, said: "I thought she was a lovely girl."

The pair courted for three years before getting married at Martyrs and North Church in Greenock and held their reception in the Britannia Halls.

Netta hailed from Gibshill while Robert came from Chalmers Street.

She worked at Gourock Ropeworks and briefly with Newark Sail Cloth Company.

Robert left school at 14 to work at Lithgows, later moving to the galvanised works in Boundary Street.

He did his national service in Germany for two years before returning to work at Scotts as a crane man.

The couple first stayed with Netta's parents in Gibshill before moving to their own place in the Clune Brae.

They now live in Westray Avenue.

They were blessed with three children - Robert, 58, Linda, 56, and Alex, 52, and have four grandchildren, Margaret, 38, Derek, 32, Debbie, 32, and Heather, 29.

The couple enjoy holidays and their favourite destination is Portadown in Northern Ireland where Netta's nephew lives.

She said: "My nephew married a girl there and we've been going there for the last 33 years.

"We love Ballymena and Bangor. It's beautiful countryside, we prefer that to going abroad."

Netta says she knew she never doubted she would reach her 60th wedding anniversary as she and Robert 'just get along'.

Even though Robert is not in the best of health, it doesn't stop them getting out and about and enjoying life.

Their daughter Linda said: "They have a lot of love to give. They showed us right from wrong and kept us on the straight and narrow. We had a very happy childhood."

Their granddaughter Margaret also paid tribute to the pair, saying: "They brought me up from when I was 10 months old.

"They've been like my parents. They're just good in every way, they are made of strong stuff."

The special couple will celebrate with family and friends at the Britannia Social Club on Saturday October 20.
