HERO primary school children rushed to the aid of a badly injured elderly lady who had fallen on the street and hurt her head.

The kind-hearted youngsters from St Michael's Primary ran to her side in Port Glasgow town centre, cleaned her up, took care of her shopping and then put her safely on a bus.

Before leaving they even made sure the driver was fully aware of what had happened before she set off.

Their teacher was so impressed she put them up for a special award.

Now they would like to find out if the woman has made a full recovery.

Niall Graham, 10, said: "We were all going swimming in Port Glasgow and we were walking near Farmfoods when we noticed the woman.

"She had fallen and cut her head so we went into Farmfoods to get napkins and we helped clean her up.

"We lifted her shopping for her.

"She had tripped on the stairs and hurt her head.

"We asked her if she was okay and helped her to the bus with her shopping.

"We knew we had to tell an adult so we told the bus driver what had happened.

"I hope she is okay."

At the same time as the children came to her aid they watched as others adults walked on by.

Niall added: "People just walked by us."

The lady who was badly shaken at the time, was overwhelmed by the kindness of the group.

Bracken MacDonald, 11, added: "She said we were a credit to our parents."

The classmates then carried on to the swimming pool and thought nothing more of it until one their relatives informed the school.

Teacher Christine Donnelly was so moved by their heroics she awarded them for a new kindness award set up as part of their partnership with the community initiative Compassionate Inverclyde.

The group of P7s - Niall Graham, Bracken MacDonald, Sophie Temporal, Matthew Brown, Micaylah Stevenson, Marc Dunn and Kayden Brown were all presented with a prize at a special assembly.

Miss Donnelly said: "I am so proud of them, even more so because they don't even think what they did was special.

"They just know it was the right thing to do.

"Young people sometimes get a hard time and it is so good to show how kind they are.

"It would be nice to find out who the lady is, to see if she is okay."
