A SCHOOLBOY with a heart of gold staged his own bake-off to help a little girl with with cancer.

Liam McNeilly, eight, is only a year older than Port schoolgirl Rosie Mitchell, who is fighting neuroblastoma for the third time.

He wanted to help Rosie's Fighting Fund, which has been set up to pay for treatment abroad for Rosie.

Liam got busy in the kitchen to make some delicious cakes which he sold at a bake sale.

His mum Susan, of Inverkip, said: "I feel quite proud of him.

"It was a nice thing for a wee boy to do.

"Liam and his friend went round the neighbours with a tray of cakes and I texted a few of my friends."

Liam, who attends Inverkip Primary, goes to school with one of Rosie's friends Nina Harkins.

His mum Susan's niece also attends Alba Ballet classes along with Rosie.

Susan, 39, who works at McCaskie Butchers in Wemyss Bay, said: "It's a shame they have to go abroad for treatment.

"It's heartbreaking."

As well as being a class act in the kitchen busy Liam is regularly in the pool with Gourock Amateur Swimmers, is a member of Kayos Theatre Company, goes to cubs and plays football with Morton Community.

Susan said: "He wants to do something else to raise funds, so now we are thinking of ideas that he can do on his own."
