A TOP flight hockey player is hoping to inspire a new generation to stick together and follow in his footsteps.

Former under-18 international Jonny Roy is delighted to have a record number of kids attending his training camps.

He was appointed a Greenock Morton Hockey Club coach last year thanks to Sportscotland funding.

The sports science graduate is now going round schools to inject new life in to the game and return it to the glory days.

Jonny, who played top division hockey in Scotland and then moved to Australia, said: "We are going round the primary and secondary schools.

"We have had a great response to our holiday camps.

"Hockey was really popular when I was at school and I hope to get more young people involved.

"I am always telling them it is just like football with a stick."

It is a dream come true for Jonny to be flying the flag for the sport he has loved since he was eight-years-old.

He played for Greenock Hockey Club while a pupil at Greenock Academy and rose through the ranks.

Now he is turning his attention to the coaching and has just completed a degree at the West of Scotland University.

At Notre Dame High during the October break he had more than 20 youngsters learning the game and developing their skills.

He added: "The sport in Scotland is a real family affair, it is very close-knit."

Jonny, who still plays for the Greenock Morton Hockey Club, is looking for former players who may have fallen away from the game to consider returning.
