COMMUTERS from Inverclyde are facing travel chaos this morning after a serious crash on the M8.

The motorway has been closed near the Erskine Bridge after several vehicles were involved in an accident.

Traffic Scotland first raised the alarm at 8am.

Eastbound tailbacks had reached the A8 at Langbank by 8.10am but are now stretching further back into Inverclyde.

Drivers have been told to avoid the route if possible.

Traffic Scotland said: “Getting reports in of a multi-vehicle RTC #M8 E/B J30 Erskine Bridge - J31. No cameras in the area but police are en-route.”

Around 20 minutes later, their team advised that the route had been closed and that emergency vehicles were in attendance.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the Tele: "We were called to a road crash involving five vehicles at 7.55am on the M8 eastbound at junction 30.

“Emergency services are in attendance but there are no reports of serious injury.

"The road remains closed for recovery operations. There are also reports of another 15 vehicles with minor bumps."
