A 31-YEAR-OLD man was hit with a glass in the face during an unprovoked attacked  in a Greenock pub restaurant yesterday evening.

The victim suffered severe cuts to his ear and his face when he was set upon by a group of thugs in the Tail O' the Bank in Rue End at around 5pm.

His attackers, who were in the pub with a larger group, were all wearing suits and ties and appear to have been at a function elsewhere.

Detectives are now appealing for help from those who were in the pub at the time, to catch those responsible.

Greenock Police Detective Sergeant Neil Martin said: "This appears to be an unprovoked attack. It took place near the pool table. The victim was with his friends when he was attacked by a group of about three or four men in their early 20s wearing suits and ties.

"It appears he was hit with a glass suffering lacerations to his ear and cuts to his face."

"We are now looking through CCTV. We are appealing for anyone who was in the Tail O'Bank and may have witnessed the attack to contact us."

The serious assault victim was sitting with a small group of friends when the trouble started.

He was taken to Inverclyde Royal for treatment and later released from hospital.

Anyone who has information which could help the police with their enquires should contact Greenock Police on 101. Or alternatively phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
