ACTORS from around the world were upstaged by a Greenock showman as he picked up an award for his leading role in a Scottish crime drama.

Robert Harrison won the 'best actor' prize at a film festival in Bilbao, Spain, for his portrayal of hitman 'Frank' in an online TV mini-series of the same name.

The gritty drama, set in the criminal underworld of Glasgow, was filmed in the city last year and Robert says it was a privilege just to be involved in the project let alone be honoured for it.

The actor, who is also known for his popular Bob Dylan tribute Bobby Does Dylan, spent a week in Bilbao for the Seriesland International Film Festival and was thrilled to fly home with a trophy.

Robert said: "I was amazed at the high standard set by other nominees and surprised to be chosen for my portrayal as 'Frank'.

"Just being nominated for 'best actor' was fantastic. "It was a pleasure to meet with film-makers and actors from different countries, from as far afield as the USA, Russia, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Canada, Japan and Australia. "The Spanish hosts couldn't do enough to make all the participants feel welcome and at ease."

Robert was given the red carpet treatment on tours of the city and invited to the awards show after-party.

But he modestly says he is only as good as the people he works with, and paid tribute to the rest of the cast and crew for his success.

He is also keen to see scenes for any future episodes filmed in his hometown.

Robert said: "Frank was shot in Glasgow but hopefully the series takes off because I would love to do locations in Greenock.

"Playing the role was great as was working alongside my co-star, Duncan Airlie James.

"It was like a dream come true when I heard my name announced as a winner. "It was a good experience because I've worked hard on short films - often unpaid - because I'm dedicated to the film industry. "To get that award was very special.

"If you believe you will achieve."
