COUNCIL planners have rejected a move to demolish a large section of the Oak Mall shopping centre.

A proposal had been put forward asking to knock down eastern part of the mall that extends beneath the A78 High Street, up to and including the existing entrance on to Clyde Square.

A new entreance was to be created on the Hunter Place side of the mall.

The Oak Mall said the demolition was needed because of the high rate of vacancy within the mall and leaks from the main A78 trunk road which runs directly over the shopping centre.

But planners say that Transport Scotland say that the mall "does not require to be partially demolished" to allow it to inspect and maintain the road structure.

Beaks refused the application saying it would result in "unjustified loss of retail floorspace" together with creation of a large vacant, fenced-off site in the town centre with no proposals or timetable for redevelopment. The section of the mall involved has 14 current retailers -- such as Argos, M&Co and Fresh -- occupying a variety of unit sizes.
