A LIGHTS fantastic show was staged as Greenock held its annual Christmas switch-on.

Hundreds of families gathered in Cathcart Square to mark the start of the festive season.

The square was transformed into a magical winter wonderland as the community got into the festive spirit.

Inverclyde’s Provost Martin Brennan says he was thrilled to turn on the lights alongside Santa.

He said: "It was great to see such a good turnout and the weather was in our favour.

"There were lots of smiling, excited faces waiting to see Santa and his reindeer.

"It was lovely to have the support of the Wellpark Mid Kirk, who opened their doors to all for hot chocolate and Christmas carols.

"The lights in and around the square are looking lovely.

"Christmas has well and truly arrived in Greenock."

Stars of the Beacon panto Sleeping Beauty added some sparkle to the proceedings, much to the delight of the crowds.

Still Game star Jane McCarry, who plays Carabosse in the show, told the Tele it was a magical evening.

Jane said: "It was great fun.

"I was delighted to be back in Greenock.

"There was a real sense of Christmas spirit amongst the crowd and it was lovely to see the smiles on the kids' faces when they saw Santa and Rudolph.

"It really was a fabulous night and the perfect way to start the countdown to Christmas."
