A POPULAR Greenock fish and chip shop is in the running for a tasty award — thanks to its loyal customers.

The Orangefield chippy is shortlisted for a best takeaway gong in the Renfrewshire Business Awards.

Proud shop owner Marco Demelas, 50, says he is delighted to be nominated.

Marco said: "Considering we are the only fish chip shop in Greenock to be shortlisted, it is a great honour.

"I've been here for 23 years and this is the first time I've been up for any award, so it's quite special.

"It was my customers who nominated me for it — I didn't know anything about it until I got a letter through the post.

"It is a great feeling to know that you are appreciated by the people you serve, so I hope I can win it for them.

"It's good to be recognised in this way."

Marco will be attending the glittering awards bash at the Glynhill Hotel and Leisure Club in Paisley on Sunday.

He said: "My customers have been very loyal to me, because I used to have a shop elsewhere in Greenock.

"It would be great to win, both for me and for the town.

"I'll enjoy the event no matter what, but I'm excited by the thought of winning.

"It's great to have such fantastic and thoughtful support from our customers."
