STAFF at a Greenock clothes shop were given the shock news that they were losing their jobs on the day the store they worked in was axed.

The Officers Club, located in the Oak Mall Shopping Centre, suddenly closed its doors on Wednesday - leaving stunned staff out of work just weeks before Christmas.

A source, who did not wish to be named, told the Tele that staff at the men's clothing shop had no idea the closure was on the cards until earlier that day when senior management visited the store to break the bad news.

They said: "The staff went to work as normal on Wednesday but management came down in the middle of the morning and by the afternoon the shop had closed.

"It's a shocking way to treat their staff, especially with Christmas is just around the corner.

"This is not the first time it's closed down - that branch has closed and re-opened so many times, nobody really knows if that will be the case in the new year. again."

A spokeswoman from M&M Asset Management, which runs the Oak Mall, said that The Officers Club was now in administration.

She said: "It is our understanding that the company has gone into administration throughout the UK.

"It's now with the administrators to see what happens next."

The shop is currently unoccupied, with all the fixtures and fittings removed, but there is no sign on the windows to explain to customers the reason for the closure.

On the Officers Club's official website it says 'The Clubhouse Is Being Refurbished' with no further details and no contact telephone number.

We contacted the firm by email asking for an update on the Greenock store but nobody from the company responded to our request for comment.
