KIND Inverclyde residents are encouraging people 'to give not to receive' as they look to use a traditional Christmas countdown to help those who are struggling.

The Kilmacolm Residents' Association have launched a reverse advent calendar - where people collect one item each day for the Inverclyde Foodbank during December.

Frances Fulton, who is the secretary of the association, said: "I saw something about reverse advent calendars on Facebook and I thought it was a great idea.

"So between us we decided to organise it locally.

"I always think it helps for everyone to show support for the wider communities we are part of and the food bank is a great cause.

"The reason for the article is really to encourage other community groups to join in.

"The foodbank has a big drop in donations after Christmas and a rise in use, so this is such a good time to help.

"All you need is an empty cardboard box and then, starting around 1 December, simply put one item of canned or long-life food or toiletries into the box each day."

Also supporting the project was Antony Vitrano, events co-ordinator for the association, as well as Val Crookston, environmental representative for the group and her husband Bill, who is chairman.

Antony said: "It's good for kids to get involved too and for them to think about those who are not as well off as they are.

"It's all about giving rather than receiving."

Inverclyde East councillor Chris Curley today voiced his support for the project.

The SNP councillor said: "This is a great initiative from Kilmacolm Residents' Association and hopefully other groups and individuals will think about getting involved.

"At this time of year it is is all to easy to get caught up in your own issues and not think of others who are less fortunate.

"We are, after all, celebrating the birth of someone who benefited greatly from the kindness of strangers."

Fraser Donaldson, of the food bank, said: "I think the reverse advent calendar is a brilliant idea.

"We are really appreciative for the support we receive from our local community."

The Kilmacolm Residents' Association have arranged, with permission of the Kilmacolm Scouts, for boxes to be dropped off to the Scout Hall in Barrs Brae, Kilmacolm between 11am and 2pm on Sunday December 23.

They will ensure that donations are then taken to the Inverclyde Foodbank.
