POLICE are to visit bookmaker shops and other licensed premises across Inverclyde as part of a festive public protection operation following recent armed robberies.

The initiative was announced to councillors by Chief Inspector Debbie Reilly at the latest meeting of the district's Police and Fire Scrutiny Committee.

In the most recent incident, Coral on Greenock's Dunlop Street was held up last month and earlier this year Betfred on Newton Street and the Liquor Shed off-sales on West Stewart Street were robbed.

Ch Insp Reilly said: "We have a plan and strategy in place for preventions and officers are going round all licensed premises and bookmakers as part of this strategy."

The meeting was told that six recent robberies were committed by three individuals who are now off the streets.

Ch Insp Reilly said: "The visits are part of our festive campaign to prevent incidents and protect people."

Greenock man James Bowman, 35, has already appeared in court charged with the Coral raid.

It is alleged that he brandished a Stanley blade at a woman and stole £245.

Bowman, of Neil Street, is currently remanded in custody following a court appearance where he made no plea to the charge.

Around £400 was stolen from the Liquor Shed and £3,000 taken during the robbery at Betfred in April.
