A VETERAN road safety campaigner has welcomed plans to introduce traffic calming measures - 21 years after she started fighting for them.

Ivy Siegfried, 81, the former secretary of Cowdenknowes Residents Association, says the group was founded for that very reason.

She was surprised after all these years that Inverclyde Council are now consulting residents over the installation of chicanes on Dunlop Street between Wallace and Nimmo Street.

Mrs Siegfried said: "I feel vindicated. I've been fighting for this for 21 years.

"This issue that started our association.

"Our houses were getting shaken apart and because of the traffic."

Mrs Siegfried says she feels the council has waited to introduce these measures because of the widening of the bend at Baker's Brae.

The proposal has been prompted by the results of traffic count which reports on the number and speed of vehicles travelling on Dunlop Street

In the letter sent out to residents, it said: "The findings found that a significant number of vehicles are travelling above the speed limit of 30mph.

Mrs Siegfried said: I'm pleased that something is happening.

"We've had road checks every so often, this is the first time anything has been done about it.

"It's because they've found a number of cars are breaking the speed limit.

Chris Brindley, 76, who lives in nearby Thom Street, said: "Anything that makes the place safer has got to be a good idea.

"There's so much traffic on the road now, a lot of the problems is caused by the volume of traffic.

"We have two schools in this area Notre Dame and St Patrick's and traffic calming is the only way to slow the traffic down."

People have until January 11 to lodge their comments or objections.
