GOUROCK householders are being urged to be extra vigilant in the run-up to Christmas after a property was broken into and other streets were targeted.

A television and jewellery were stolen during an 11pm raid in Cove Road on Sunday.

Neighbours reported seeing lights on within the house, knowing that its owners were away.

Meanwhile, officers are following a positive line of inquiry regarding a suspicious man who was seen loitering and trying the doors of houses in Glen Avenue at the weekend.

He was confronted by residents and made an excuse about being lost and needing a taxi.

The man is described as being in his early to mid-20s, 5ft 8ins to 5ft 10ins tall, with short brown hair and a strong English accent.

He was wearing a black puffer jacket.

Sergeant Laura Stewart, of Greenock police, said: “There is nothing at this time to link both matters, however, it would be helpful to get out a message to residents in the area, particularly Glen Avenue, Burnside Road, Argyle Road, Reservoir Road, Garvie Avenue and down to Cove Road to be vigilant and to contact police if they notice anyone suspicious in the area or indeed have any information from either of these incidents.”

The dog branch and force helicopter were called out as officers tracked intruders.
