STARS were shining bright on stage as Port Glasgow schoolchildren put on a Christmas cracker of a nativity.

Boys and girls from St Michael's Primary put on three performances, including a new evening show which went down a storm with parents.

Each child played a crucial role as the whole school teamed up for a more traditional nativity, but with a slight twist.

Older pupils narrated the 'greatest story ever told' in rhyme while children in primaries one to three acted out the scenes.

They played to full houses on three consecutive days, including a night-time show for the first time last Wednesday.

Colette Wallace, St Michael's head teacher, said: "The evening performance was in response to requests from working parents which we said we would trial and see how it went and it was highly successful and we had lots of positive feedback. "It's been great and the staff - teaching, support and office staff - have worked so hard to make it the success it was and were willing to give their own time to come out and help with the night-time show."

While the children all had important individual roles, Mrs Wallace was delighted to see the whole cast on stage at the same time, especially for the finale when they raised the roof off the assembly hall.

The head teacher said: "The nativity was more traditional this time than in the past, although the older children were the narrators and done it in rhyme format while the primary one, two and three acted it out and everyone came in and sang carols and songs at relevant times.

"The whole school came together at the end for the finale and sang songs together. "We're really delighted with how it went."
