PLANS to introduce traffic calming measures on two busy Greenock roads have been welcomed.

Inverclyde Council are consulting residents over the proposed installation of chicanes on Dunlop Street between Wallace and Nimmo Street.

The are also asking for views on a plan to bring in chicanes and road humps from Lyle Road to Newton Street in the west end.

Norman McNeil, who is the treasurer of Cowdenknowes Residents' Association, said: "The residents association have been fighting for many years to try and get the council to introduce traffic calming measures on Dunlop Street.

"The measures suggested by the council have to be welcomed by the residents in an effort to reduce the speed of vehicles using the street.

"Let's hope that this is just the start of traffic calming measures for Dunlop Street, as over the next few years the volume of traffic will no doubt increase with the construction of new houses at Ravenscraig and Inverkip."

Councillor Tommy McVey is urging as many people as possible to take part in the council's consultation exercise.

He said: "I welcome this consultation.

"Vehicles speeding on these roads has been raised many times, at the various community meetings I attend each month.

"Council officers have been monitoring the situation and the statistics have shown that there are a significant number of drivers speeding on Lyle Road and also on Dunlop Street.

"Lyle Road is a walking route for children going to Clydeview Academy and with Notre Dame High School being located on Dunlop Street, many parents, as well as local residents, are concerned about speeding vehicles.

"I would urge as many people as possible to make their views known to the council via the consultation."

People have until January 11 to lodge their comments or objections.
