TWO hospice workers are leading by example as they tackle the 'Aff it for Ardgowan' challenge in preparation for personal challenges.

Chris Morton and Alex Mula from the charity's fundraising team are ditching snacks in order to get fit.

Chris is abstaining from alcohol, takeaways and snacking for January, as he prepares to climb Ben Nevis later this year.

Alex is resisting the office snacks and treats in a bid to be ready to take part in the Edinburgh Half Marathon in May.

Chris said: “I am struggling slightly, all the chocolate and alcohol from Christmas is sitting in the house but I will resist temptation, I think I will manage.

“I am aiming to raise £500 and set up a JustGiving page so I could be held accountable - once you do that there is no going back!

“It’s a great way to get healthy at the start of the year and it helps that Alex is in it with me.”

Alex added: “There are a lot of sugary snacks in the office and at home - I have banned them in the house but it is hard to say no in the office.

"I have been pretty hungry but have managed to find healthy snacks to eat.”

Alex signed up for the half marathon last year as motivation to get fit.

He said: “I wanted to challenge myself, I have done a 10k before and thought this was the next step.

“I am usually there taking pictures at the half marathon but this year I will be taking part.

"I try to set myself a challenge every year. I have a training plan in place and the challenge is a good head start.”

Alex, who is aiming to raise £300, said: "We can’t ask people to tackle the 'Aff it' challenge if we aren’t willing to do it ourselves.

“Everyone is guilty of overindulging at Christmas and this is a good way to get fit.”
