A FORMER moderator of Greenock presbytery is still leading worship 17 years after he retired.

Reverend Andrew Taylor marked his milestone 90th birthday with a celebration in Largs' Clark Memorial Church, surrounded by friends and his wife May.

It was at the age of 30 that Andrew was called to the ministry of the Church of Scotland.

Sixty years later his faith remains as important to him as ever and he still conducts services in North Ayrshire.

After five and a half years of study he was called to Greenock Union Church where he immersed himself in the community, giving 33 years of service.

As well as being moderator he was chaplain for the Greenock Telegraph and president of Greenock Rotary, from who he received the prestigious Paul Harris award for services to the community.

When he retired in 1992 he and his wife moved down the coast to settle in Largs.

Andrew and his wife May have three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Their daughter Moira and her husband, former Greenock lawyer Alan Urquhart, live in Cumbria.

Rev Taylor said: "When I joined the ministry I joined it for life, so still performing services is not something I think twice about.

"The way I see it is that as long as I have a message to give, and as long as I can deliver it, I will, no matter what age I am.

"I certainly don't feel 90.

"I still run around pushing the grandchildren on the roundabout, much to my daughter's despair."
