A RECRUITMENT drive is taking off as the local Air Cadets look to boost their ranks.

Many young people in Inverclyde have learned new skills and made new friends thanks to being part of the local organisation.

The 49F MacRobert Greenock Squadron has members ranging from the age of 12 to 18 and are looking to sign up more people.

Cadets take part in activities that offer challenge, excitement and adventure and make new friendships along the way.

Sean Boyle, 16, from Greenock, has been in the cadets for four years after hearing about it through friends.

He said: “My favourite thing about it is the variety of skills you learn.

“I have learned how to fire and maintain rifles, first aid skills, how to contact an aircraft and even how to iron clothes.

“It has taught me to be a better person."

Dylan McKenna, 16, from Gourock, wants to join the Royal Air Force and joined the cadets three years ago.

He said: “My favourite part of being an air cadet is the flying and shooting.

"I have picked up lots of skills since joining, including how to fly a plane - which is great since I plan on joining the RAF.”

Some of the young people have gone on to become leaders with the squadron.

Abigail Cameron, 16, from Inverkip, joined three years ago after receiving a leaflet.

She said: “I have learned leadership and communication skills and met people from all over the world.

"I now help teach classes and assist the junior cadets.”

Scott McAllister, 16, from Port Glasgow found out about the air cadets through a recruitment stall at the Oak Mall.

He said: “It’s a wonderful way to meet lifelong friends you wouldn’t otherwise

"I have been lucky and travelled all over the UK and met people interested in similar things.”

An interest in aviation inspired Grant Gallagher, 13, from Gourock, to sign up.

He said: “There are so many amazing opportunities available. I have already learned a lot about myself and my capabilities. We are all mates and we have fun.”

Andrew Doolan and Noah Cullen, 12, from Port Glasgow, are encouraging people to join them.

Andrew said: “It’s the best thing I have ever done.”

Noah added: “It’s a great experience, it gives you teambuilding skills and the chance to socialise and meet new people.”
