NEW road markings have been installed in a bid to stop speeding drivers near a Greenock play park.

Residents say drivers are ‘flying’ round a blind bend from Brachelston Street onto Old Inverkip Road — where kids cross to reach the nearby play park.

Independent councillor Tommy McVey took up the issue with Inverclyde Council on their behalf.

As a result, new road markings have been painted urging drivers to 'slow down'.

Additional markings have also been put down in an effort to stop motorists from cutting the corner and speeding round the bend.

Councillor McVey said: "The additional road markings and signage have been installed in response to residents' concerns, regarding traffic driving at speed, around the corner of Brachelston Street and onto Old Inverkip Road.

"This is effectively a blind corner adjacent to the Lady Alice play park.

"Hopefully drivers will adhere to the new road markings and reduce their speed accordingly.

"My thanks go to the roads department for their co-operation."

Billy O'Neill, who lives in Old Inverkip Road, says cars regularly go around the bend at speed.

The 51-year-old dad-of-three said: "My wife's car was parked in the street 200 yards from the junction and it was written off after someone crashed into it back in December 2017.

"I'm worried that a kid is going to be knocked down next."

Billy is pleased to see the traffic calming measures but believes more could be done..

He added: "I welcome the signs but they need to put in speed bumps.

"Tommy is the only one that has done anything about it.

"This is an important first step but we need speed bumps."
