THE final phase of demolishing the former St Stephen's High in Port Glasgow is under way.

Contractors are tearing down the original school building - 'A' block - to make way for hundreds of new homes.

Demolition work began at the end of last year and is due to be completed by the end of February.

Housing association River Clyde Homes has bought the land from Inverclyde Council and wants to build a total of 224 properties - 122 cottage flats, 48 assisted living apartments and 54 back and front door, two and three-bed houses.

The proposals are currently being considered by the local authority's planning department.

The St Stephen's building originally housed Port High and was also home to Lady Alice and Kilmacolm primaries in recent years.

It was used as the principal location for zombie musical film 'Anna and the Apocalypse', which was shot there in 2017 and released last month.

Port High staff and pupils shared the school with St Stephen's until the new shared campus opened in December 2013.
