A SUPER centurion is the toast of staff and residents at a Greenock care home after turning 100.

Doreen Meikle celebrated the milestone surrounded by family and friends.

Her niece, Irene Keenan, 75, attended the celebration and praised staff at Larkfield View for making it such a special day.

She said: “Doreen was born in London and moved to Inverclyde when she was seven.

"She has been at Larkfield View Care Home for around five years and the staff have all been brilliant.

“They have all been very excited to mark the occasion and went out their way to make sure everything was ready for her birthday.

"They have decorated her room beautifully. She is always fussed over but today she has really been the centre of attention.

“We want to thank them for organising everything, we have enjoyed lots of treats, cakes and entertainment.

“Doreen has enjoyed seeing everyone and being fussed over.”

Carer Susan Kane helped get everything ready for the celebrations.

She said: “It's lovely to have such a milestone celebration.

“The card from the Queen arrived this morning and we were all very excited. Its beautiful and makes the day a wee bit more special.

“Doreen has taken everything in her stride."

The landmark celebration was a first for manager Elsie Maclennan, who has been in nursing for 46 years.

Elsie said: “This is the first ever resident I have had to reach 100 so its been really exciting.

"Doreen wasn't feeling great so was in bed but we took the party to her.

“Residents have all stopped by her room and wished her well and the son of one of the residents even emailed me to say that his mum was friends with Doreen and he wanted to pass on his happy birthday wishes.

“We had a vintage afternoon tea theme for the food and drink.

"This is one of the great parts of the job.”
