Teenagers get the chance to interview one of the most important people in parliament

The modern studies pupils at Port Glasgow High School will take part in an online question and answer session with John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons this morning.

Simon Kretowicz, principal teacher of humanities at the school, said it's a 'once in a lifetime' chance for the pupils to grill someone who is right at the heart of our democracy.

He told the Tele: "It's a brilliant opportunity.

"This is the best time to speak to the speaker of the House of Commons as decisions about Brexit are being made every other day."

Pupil Leah Gallagher, who is in third year, has lined up some questions for Mr Bercow, who they will speak to over the online video chat service Skype.

The 14-year-old said: "I'll be asking him how he got into politics and how he felt when he became the speaker of the House of Commons."

Scott McAllister, 16, who is studying Higher modern studies, says the Q&A will help them to prepare for their exam.

He said: "One of the sections for the Higher is on the UK Parliament so this will give us a unique perspective."

Also looking forward to their chance to grill Mr Bercow are Alex Stoddart,16, who is also studying Higher modern studies and Sam Todd, 14, who is in third year.

Alex said: "I want to know how he remembers everyone's names!"

Sam added: "I want to ask him how he dealt with people accusing him recently of being biased over Brexit."

Pupils from St Columba's High School in Gourock will also have the chance to interview Mr Bercow in March.

Inverclyde's MP Ronnie Cowan says he is delighted the pupils have been given this opportunity.

He said: "When I was told of the opportunity for Inverclyde schools to submit an application to participate in the Ask The Speaker programme I contacted Inverclyde Council and our schools.

"I’m delighted to learn that both Port Glasgow High and St Columba’s in Gourock have been granted slots to take part."
