A MEXICAN inspired fast food restaurant is set to open in Greenock.

The drive-thru Taco Bell will open at the Waterfront Retail Park off Customhouse Way later this year.

Known for its Tex-Mex tacos, burritos, quesadillas and nachos, the American fast-food chain is set to bring jobs to the area.

HAMCAP (Greenock) LLP, the company which owns the retail park, have just submitted a fresh planning application to Inverclyde Council for the drive-thru and hope to starting building work this summer.

A spokesman for the company said: "I am pleased to advise that the new restaurant we are proposing for the park is Taco Bell.

"Taco Bell is a YUM! Brand offering Mexican inspired fusion food, trading from over 40 sites nationwide since 2010.

"It trades from high street, retail parks and shopping centres and offers deliveries.

"The franchisee, Taco-Time, are trading from two sites in Scotland with a further six sites in the pipeline for 2019."

Planning permission for a new restaurant at the site was first secured back in 2015 and renewed last year.

The Greenock drive-thru will be just the third Taco Bell, in Scotland with further restaurants in Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow and in Irvine.

Originally launched in the United States, there are currently more than 425 Taco Bell outlets across 27 markets outside of the US and bosses aim to expand the brand’s international presence to 9,000 restaurants by 2022.
