INVERCLYDE'S provost caused a chain reaction when he met pupils at a Port Glasgow school.

Councillor Martin Brennan paid a special visit to children in St Michael's Primary as part of their 'world of work' week.

Mr Brennan was invited along to speak about his role as Inverclyde's civic figurehead, being an elected member and his previous career in teaching.

The provost also brought along his ceremonial gold chains for the P7 pupils to try on, much to their delight.

The visit was organised by class teacher Danielle Kearns.

Miss Kearns said: "I contacted Provost Brennan as we are looking at careers and the skills and qualifications needed for them. "As an ex-pupil of his, I knew that he would be very engaging for the pupils."

A number of guests from a variety of professional backgrounds visit the school each year to discuss their work and give the youngsters some food for thought about what they would like to do when they finish their education.

Provost Brennan gave a talk about his teaching and political careers and then held a Q&A with the inquisitive boys and girls.

Miss Kearns said: "He was great with the pupils and was able to answer their questions with lots of information and sometimes even anecdotes which helped deepen their understanding of his role. "His easy sense of humour captured their attention and interest straight away and they were very enthusiastic about the visit. "Today we are holding a jobs fayre in conjunction with Newark Primary and this will take place in Newark. "We have invited a range of speakers from the likes of JP Morgan, Shore Vets, Ferguson's shipyard, Glasgow University and lots more. "The children will have the opportunity to speak to these people about their occupations and ask them questions to find out more about their roles."
