A GREENOCK dad is teeing up a starring role in a new sport which combines football and golf.

Daniel Mains will fly the flag for Inverclyde in the Scottish 'Tartan Tour' of FootGolf, which begins next month.

The game is like a round of golf but with players instead using their feet to knock a football around the course and into larger holes.

Amateur footballer Daniel, 36, also plays for local side Belleaire but will swap the grass of Rankin Park for greens and fairways around the country on the tour.

He said: "It came about after I liked a post I saw on Facebook from Caprington FootGolf Club.

"The club captain messaged me and asked if I'd be interested in playing and it went from there.

"I enjoy it because it's something different and a real test of accuracy."

The shipyard worker started out with Kilmarnock-based Caprington last year in the official FootGolf league and is now looking to test himself against the best players in the country.

The Tartan Tour, which runs from March 24 through until September, is a 13 event series combining competitions in Scotland - in places such as Edinburgh, Fife and Ayrshire - with the UK Open and The International tournaments later in the year.

Daniel is hoping to attract kit sponsors to help cover the costs of competing, including travelling and entry fees, as he pushes himself to the next level of the sport, which is rapidly expanding around the world.

He said: "My aim is to finish each event as high as possible alongside current Scotland internationals and UK internationals. "There's a possibility of representing Scotland myself depending on results.

"FootGolf is becoming a fast-growing sport all over the world. "It's unique and something I'm delighted to be involved with."
