A TOP Greenock golfer has teed up a dream job at one of the world's most exclusive courses named after a famous major winner.

Stephen Wilson is about to jet off to Dubai to take on the role of tournament co-ordinator at the Ernie Els Golf Club.

The pro golfer has worked on some of the country's best clubs and now he will be taking his talents to the United Arab Emirates.

But the modest 23-year-old, who has worked his way up the ranks, says he would never have had the chance to reach the top without Whinhill Golf Club and the dedication of club official Gary Havlin.

Stephen, who lives in Kelly Street with his mum, said: "I would never have had this opportunity without Whinhill.

"I went for a game when I was only seven and I have played ever since.

"The junior section is brilliant and that is all thanks to Gary.

He does it off his own back because he loves the game."

Now former Notre Dame High pupil Stephen, who was brought up by his proud mum Elizabeth, a nurse at Inverclyde Royal, will leave his post at Dundonald to take on his new role in the heart of the desert.

The course, owned by golf giants Troon Golf, was designed by former US open champion and former world number one South African Els.

As tournament co-ordinator Stephen will look after VIP guests and tailor their golfing stays.

He added: "I am so excited.

"It is my dream job, golf in the sun - I am sure everyone will be coming out for a holiday!"

Stephen's rise to the top started at Whinhill where he won club championships and went onto take county titles.

He said: "Whinhill used to support us in so many ways.

"I wouldn't have been able to get to tournaments without them."
