ELEVEN key Inverclyde routes have been identified for resurfacing as part of a £3 million package of road and pavement repairs.

Council officials are seeking permission to press ahead with £1m worth of work on the likes of Cloch Road in Gourock, Greenock's Brougham Street, Heggies Avenue in Port Glasgow and Kilmacolm's Port Glasgow Road.

If given the green light, resurfacing would take place over the course of a year, starting from next month.

The programme would also include work on sections of Auchmead Road, Eldon Street, Glencairn Road, Grieve Road, Pennyfern Road and Waverley Street in Greenock and Ardmore Road in the Port.

Gail MacFarlane, the council's head of roads and transportation, said: "The priority investment programme for carriageways has been determined through analysis of available information comprising: road hierarchy, results from the Scottish road maintenance condition survey (SRMCS), local route knowledge with regard to defective lengths of carriageway, evidence of defects, number of complaints, accident statistics, liability claims, and public, councillor, and other requests."

The proposed resurfacing work is part of a wider £3.2m package of improvements across the district which councillors will be asked to approve at a meeting of the environment and regeneration committee today.

Officials want to spend just under £1m on street lighting upgrades, a further £200,000 on carriageway surface treatments, £200k on 'large patching' repairs, £323k on pavements, £120k for 'other assets' - such as drainage, signs, road markings and traffic calming measures - and £310k to cover fees and staffing costs.

The council will also receive a further £107k from the Scottish Government to improve walking and cycling routes, including the installation of a pavement under the railway bridge on Sinclair Street, the widening of a section of the Cloch Road bike track and the introduction of more dropped kerbs and 'build-outs' to boost visibility at road junctions.
