AN ALERT has today been issued over counterfeit cash circulating in Inverclyde.

Shops and businesses in Inverclyde are warned to be on their guard against fake notes.

It comes after attempts were made to cash them over counters.

Greenock police say they have been made aware of fake £50 notes in circulation in the district.

Sergeant Laura Stewart said: "We are warning retailers to be vigilant."

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101.
