A FATHER and daughter from Greenock are set to pay tribute to a late loved one whose life was claimed by stomach cancer.

Lisa Dyer and her dad Gordon have signed up to take part in the 15-mile Glasgow Kiltwalk later this year as a way of saying thanks to the staff at Ardgowan Hospice.

They cared for Gordon's brother Robert before he passed away and Lisa, 19, says the staff have 'a special place in our hearts'.

She told the Tele: "My uncle Robert spent the last two weeks of his life there being cared for by a team of wonderful nurses who should be very proud of the work they do.

“Our family will forever be indebted to them.

“To show our gratitude, we would like to raise money for the hospice, so other families can continue to benefit from the outstanding work they do.”

Gordon is taking on the walk despite having a plastic left knee and arthritis in his right knee.

He is determined to complete the challenge.

Gordon said: “I know it’s going to be difficult but nothing I will feel on the day and after will come close to the pain my brother Robert went through when he was struggling with stomach cancer.

“My sister-in-law and I stayed in the family room at the hospice at the end of Robert’s life.

"We were always around and we had a great rapport with the nurses.

“It was a homely place and we had some special times at the end.

"It made it better for us all knowing that Robert got the best care in such a friendly and uplifting place.”

Lisa is a graphic design student who shared a love of art with her uncle and when he died she got a tattoo inspired by one of his paintings so he would always be there on her shoulder.

Elaine McNeill, fundraising officer at the hospice, is delighted that Lisa and Gordon have signed up to tackle the kiltwalk in aid of Ardgowan.

She said: “The Kiltwalk is an incredible fundraising event for the hospice as The Hunter Foundation will top up all fundraising by 40 per cent, so for each £100 raised by walkers the hospice will receive £140.

“The event is open to all ages, stages and levels of fitness. You can do anything from 23 miles to The Wee Wander at 6 miles. You can take your kids, dogs and enjoy the amazing atmosphere and entertainment organised by the Kiltwalk.”

Lisa and Gordon, who have already managed to raise more than £650, have an online sponsorship page.
