UNSEASONAL snow failed to deter parents and pupils from enjoying a super spring fete in Greenock.

Everyone at St Patrick's Primary ploughed ahead to ensure that their fabulous fete went ahead as planned on Saturday, despite the icy underfoot conditions.

Depute head teacher Geraldine Ogilby said it was lovely to see the school community rally round.

She said: "We woke up to the snow on Saturday morning and we initially thought we would have to cancel the fete.

"But our janitor Robert McDonald alongside helpers including my husband and a couple of dads came along with snow shovels to clear the paths."

The star of the show was the school's long-time lollipop man Roy Kerrigan, who has since been moved to another school after a new set of traffic lights were installed.

Popular Roy opened the event much to the delight of the schoolchildren.

Mrs Ogilby said: "The children were all delighted to see him.

"It was like a celebrity coming to the school!

"It was lovely for Roy to come back to see everybody."

After a slow start, the fete soon sprang to life.

Mrs Ogilby added: "There was only about four people waiting to get in but half an hour later it got really busy.

"Everyone had put their wellies on and trekked through the snow to get there.

"It turned out to be a great day."

The fete, organised by the parent council, raised the super sum of £1,260 for school funds.

Mrs Ogilby has thanked everyone who helped make the event such a big success.
