A DANCER who made the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent is bringing ballroom to a Greenock primary school.

Nicola Lafferty has been dancing professionally for around 15 years but after a string of injuries decided to become a teacher and is now on a probation year at Ardgowan Primary.

Nicola decided she wanted to combine her passion for dance of all kind with her passion for teaching - and has inspired the kids to hit the dancefloor.

She started the Strictly Ardgowan club and now has between 25 and 30 children attending every week.

Nicola has enjoyed career highlights sich as reaching the Britain’s Got Talent live shows with her group CountryVive in 2014 and performing as part of a flash mob on Table Mountain in South Africa.

She said: “When I started at the school a lot of the pupils already did street and country dancing, but Latin and ballroom were not common, so with the popularity of Strictly Come Dancing I decided to give them that opportunity.

“I asked if I could run the class and everyone was so supportive. The staff here are a great team and they encouraged me to give it a go.

“The class is open to pupils from primary four to seven and everyone is really enjoying it.”

The group meet on Monday’s after school and since starting in February Nicola has noticed a big improvement in all those attending.

She joked: “At the start they were reluctant to partner up but now they are keen to get started right away!

“They are all really committed to learning, rarely miss a week and even practice at home. I am hoping they can perform at an assembly at the end of the year to showcase everything they have learned.”

Nicola said her favourite thing about Latin and ballroom is the music and the different styles within the genre and she hopes to continue the classes after her probationary year ends.

She said: “I love teaching the children, they are all so enthusiastic.

"Many of them have asked if there are any classes locally but I think the nearest is Glasgow so if I stay at Ardgowan I’d love to continue them."
