A YOUNG man has suffered an eye injury after petrol was thrown in his face.

Detectives say the 19-year-old was attacked while he was walking near to McLaren Packaging in Gareloch Road in Port Glasgow at 5pm last night.

Another 19-year-old, who is believed to be known to the victim, threw the substance at him from a bottle.

The injured man made his way to hospital where he was treated for swelling to his eye.

Detective Constable Neil Gorman, of Greenock CID, said: "We are treating it as a suspected petrol attack, the victim suffered swelling to his eye.

"It was a targeted attack, it is an isolated incident, the men are known to each other.

"The victim made his own way to hospital."

DC Gorman said the assailant made off and the injured party was released from Inverclyde Royal following treatment.

He said: "We are following a positive line of inquiry but are appealing for anyone with information to call police on 101."
