A ROAD in Port Glasgow had to be dug up for a second time - because contractors made a mess of resurfacing work.

Inverclyde Council officials ordered Hillington-based company Landscapes & Contracts to redo Princes Street in the town centre after it was deemed sub-standard.

The entire stretch had to be shut for a second time while the road was carved up and relaid once more.

Initial resurfacing took place on the first weekend in March but contractors were back on site on April 6 and 7.

The work was part of a £335,000 project to overhaul pavements and roads along the main town centre street.

Local authority chiefs today confirmed that the company will pay for any additional costs.

A council spokesman said: "The original resurfacing work was not up to the standard specified and we informed the contractor that it had to be done again. "The contractor is meeting the additional costs involved."

Work got under way in September last year to give the Port town centre an overhaul.

All pavements along Princes Street were upgraded and the public seating area at the junction of Church Street, just outside St Andrew's, was also given a makeover.

The work was carried out in stages before the road itself was completely resurfaced.

The £335k investment included a £150k grant from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) and it is part of a £2.5 million investment by the council in Inverclyde's town and village centres.
