A MAN aged 87 has died following a three car crash on the A8.

The accident happened yesterday afternoon in Port Glasgow.

The pensioner was driving a red Fiesta when it hit the back of a Volkswagon Touran while travelling westbound near Newark Castle roundabout, seriously injuring a 75-year-old woman passenger.

They in turn hit a Jaguar XType in front, with both the driver and the passenger escaping uninjured.

The 87-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by the emergency services.

Sergeant Kenny Malaney, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “We are trying to establish exactly what happened here and would appeal to anyone who was driving on the A8 near to Newark Castle immediately prior to, or at the time of the incident, who may have information that could help us to contact us.

“We would also ask anyone with dash-cam footage to look back, it may be able to assist us. We urge you to come forward.”

The A8 was closed for five hours as police officers carried out investigations.

The 45-year-old driver of the Volkswagen was also injured and taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital along with her 75-year-old passenger following the collision at 4.20pm on Saturday.

Police say the 75-year-old is in a serious but stable condition.

The 59-year-old man and 58-year-old woman in the Jaguar were uninjured.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police via 101, quoting incident number 3177 of Saturday 20 April 2019.
