PLAYERS at Fort Matilda were 'bowled over' by the success of their recent open day.

The sun split the sky as members gathered for the eagerly-awaited annual event.

Norrie Mungin, the club secretary, says it was the perfect way to start the outdoor season.

He said: "Our opening day was a great occasion attended by most of our members and many representatives from kindred clubs and associations.

"The first bowl was thrown by Maureen Quigley, the wife of our 2019 president Gerry Quigley, with a remarkable accuracy - all on a lovely sunny day."

The players then took to the green to play eight ends before they tucked into a delicious afternoon tea which was served up by the ladies at the club.

Norrie says that with 120 people on the club's books - 100 playing members with 20 social ones - it is thriving.

He added: "Our membership is continuing to grow with a number of new people joining.

"We continue to encourage anyone to come and try bowls for free before hopefully joining.

"Guidance will be given to all new starts.

"Only flat-soled no-heel shoes or trainers are required."

The club is based in Greenock's Newark Street and anyone who would like to join is invited to pop in.
