A KIND Greenock schoolgirl spent almost three years growing her hair just so that she could donate it to young cancer patients.

Abigail Brown, nine, saw a video on YouTube when she was in primary two which featured a youngster with a huge smile on her face after receiving a real hair wig from the Little Princess Trust.

Abigail, now in P5 at St Patrick's , decided to grow her hair and was able to donate 10 inches of it to the charity, who provide real hair wigs to children and young people with hair loss.

She told the Tele: “I've wanted to donate my hair since primary two and I spent the last few years growing it so I could.

“The girl in the video had a huge smile.

"I wanted to help someone else smile like that, it’s a smile you can never forget.”

Abigail says she is still getting used to her shorter hair.

She said: “I like it and so do friends and family, my friends think what I did is really cool.

“I never thought I’d hold my own hair so that was a bit weird but I am glad I did it.

“My hair is so much lighter now and I hope it makes someone smile.”

Abigail had her hair cut at Ana-Inga Salon in Greenock and was thankful for their support.

She said: “They were amazing and did it for free, they wouldn’t let me pay or even tip."

Abigail’s dad William said he is very proud of her.

He said: “Every few months she would ask, so we decided to let her make the decision.

"She didn’t do it for any attention, she just wanted to help make someone smile and we are sure she has.”

Abigail is encouraging other girls to consider donating their hair.

She said: “If you can do it I think you should.

"I would consider doing it again but I need my hair to grow back!

“You can always just donate the minimum if you are worried about it being short and it always grows back."
