CAMPAIGNERS have won their battle to have a pedestrian crossing installed on a busy town centre road which was the scene of a fatal accident.

More than 5,000 people supported an online petition calling for a pedestrian crossing on Container Way following the tragic death of much loved Greenock man Alan Gordon, 54, who was struck by a car there in December 2017.

Council officials have now agreed to install traffic lights on the road where it meets Custom House Way, beside Tesco.

A report states that £225,000 is being provided by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport towards the traffic lights with the funding due to be spent some time in the next 12 months.

It says: "The proposed signalised junction, including a pedestrian phase, on Container Way will improve road safety and pedestrian safety."

The site is also set to become even busier in future when a new £15 cruise ship terminal building and visitor attraction is built at the waterfront.

Ronnie Cowan, the area's SNP MP, says he's relieved that safety measures are finally going to be introduced after he raised the issue back in January 2018.

The MP said: "I’m pleased to learn that common sense has prevailed and traffic calming measures are to be put in place on Container Way, something I supported last year when raising with both Inverclyde Council and Tesco.

“The tragic death of an individual on the stretch of road was a wake-up call for action to be taken and I’m glad something is finally going to be done to assist pedestrians when crossing.

"One constituent told me when contacting my office, that they were scared trying to get across that road.

"I hope for their sake and others the measures being introduced alleviate their concerns."
