THREE people were rushed to hospital after a serious road accident in Inverkip on Thursday.

Firefighters had to cut a man and woman out of one of the cars involved in a crash on the A78 between Inverkip and Wemyss Bay.

Another woman was also taken to Inverclyde Royal as a result of the smash between a Volvo and a Nissan Juke.

It closed the road for over two hours.

Sergeant Laura Stewart of Greenock police said: "We were alerted to a two vehicle crash on the A78 near to the former power station slip road.

"Two females and a male were taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

"The fire and ambulance service also attended.

"Firefighters removed two people from one car."

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 11.20am.

The road partially re-opened at around 1.30pm but was restricted in both directions until the damaged vehicles were removed, leading to delays.
