RESURFACING of the A8 at Newark roundabout is set to be carried out in the summer after complaints from Inverclyde’s MSP.

The SNP's Stuart McMillan demanded urgent action to repair the 'abysmal' carriageway in Port Glasgow after being told by Transport Scotland bosses that it would not be fixed until October.

The yellow coating on the approach to the roundabout has been gradually disintegrating for months.

The surface is badly breaking up and covered in dangerous cracks, sparking complaints from motorists whose vehicles have been left damaged.

In response to the serious concerns raised, Scotland TranServ now say they will accelerate work.

Mr McMillan said: “If Transport Scotland waited until October to mend the area, it would get worse, and more cars will likely incur damage as a result.

"Adverse weather at that time of year could also delay works.

“As the main trunk road route into Inverclyde, it’s important for our area economically and socially, so action must be taken sooner rather than later.”

Scotland TranServ told the Tele they had been monitoring the condition of the road and had planned to step in and upgrade it.

A spokesperson said: "We are accelerating our programme of resurfacing, with a project planned for the summer.

“We will work with the local community, businesses and key stakeholders to schedule the works to be completed as quickly and safely as possible, causing minimal disruption to drivers.”
