A YOUTH club in Greenock is taking on a towering task to fund a trip to Blackpool.

The senior youth group at Branchton Community Centre has launched a fundraising drive and has already gathered £1,000.

But this is only half of what they need to pay for the day out to the Pleasure Beach later this year.

The teenagers are now planning to hold a sponsored walk and a quiz night to get them over the line.

Senior youth worker Aimee Ellis said: "It's important for them to take the responsibility for their trip.

"If they don't raise the money they don't go.

"It gives them the determination and motivation to get out there and do something so they can go somewhere they want to go."

The youth club is aimed at 11 to 18-year-olds and has around 30 members turning up twice a week.

Activities include everything from baking to discussion and debating groups and board and computer games.

The money raised will be used to cover the cost of transport, staff and wristbands for the Pleasure Beach and food.

The quiz night at the community centre is on July 6 and the sponsored walk will be at the Greenock Cut on July 20.

Aimee says some of the youngsters have been attending the youth clubs at the centre since they were only five.

One of the group, Rhys O'Hara, said: "It is somewhere to go with our mates."

Sophie, 14, said: "It's a good way to make new friends as well."

The group have also set up an online crowdfunding page https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/branchtonsenioryouths where any donations will be gratefully received.
