SUPER smart senior pupils at Inverclyde Academy have unveiled their new-look uniform.

The all-girl pupil leadership team got to work in record time to introduce a new tie and blazer for next term.

Head pupil Olivia Ness and deputes Rachel McKenzie-Marner and Paris Grierson contacted Smiths to look at different options.

They then consulted pupils on which tie they preferred and a wine coloured one with the school crest was chosen.

The idea to add gold braiding instead of the tape around the blazer also went down well with pupils.

Head teacher Denise Crawford said: "The seniors came to me and said they wanted to change the senior tie as we were the only Inverclyde school not to have one.

"It has been something the pupils have wanted to do for a while.

"The girls have shown great leadership.

"We work hard in Inverclyde Academy to stress to pupils that it is their school and to take ownership of it.

"The team contacted manager Keith Wilson at Smiths, who drafted up different options, distributed them to pupils for a vote and they decided also to bring in a senior blazer with braiding.

"They produced a new uniform with a month and not only that negotiated the best price."

Rachel said: "It suits the school and it's more grown up than the junior one."

Olivia added: "I've enjoyed the project and I think it makes the senior pupils stand out more.

"The pupils made a good decision in the vote."

Paris said: "The blazer goes with the new tie really well and it looks more professional for fifth and sixth year pupils.

The new tie will be provided free of charge for senior pupils and all P7 pupils who are starting Inverclyde Academy after the holidays will receive a free tie as well.

The school is also offering parents of all pupils the chance to hire a blazer at £10 for the year to cut down on costs and encouraging pupils to wear shirts and ties to save money on branded polo shirts and sweatshirts.

Ms Crawford said: "A blazer is the most expensive piece of uniform.

"If we can rent it out for £10 and exchange it after a year for a new one, we thought this was a better way to do it.

"The new senior blazer has proved very popular and we've had 70 ordered so far."
