PUPILS at a Port primary are giving a good account of themselves after launching their own credit union.

Run by the P6 class at St Francis' Primary with support from the Tail O’ The Bank Credit Union, it teaches the pupils about money management, savings and borrowing.

Aided by classroom assistant Elizabeth Rankin, who was previously a manager at Santander, the credit union is thriving.

Elizabeth said: "We have different teams after the pupils applied and then had an interview before getting the job.

“We run the credit union every Friday morning and are taking in an average of £200 or £300 each time.

"The uptake has been brilliant and the pupils are kept busy.

“I have seen them become more confident and more professional.”

With around 20 per cent of the students saving already the group have realised how much is involved.

Manager Hannah Deary said: "I have realised there is more to a manager role than I thought.

"I thought I’d be telling people what to do but it is so much more.”

Classmate William Wilson added: “It is a good opportunity to learn for the future.

"I love getting to talk to people and helping them save.”

Teller Abbie Bryan said: “It has been harder than I thought but I have enjoyed it.”

The bankers have enjoyed the responsibility of dealing with the money.

Shanyn Stanton said: “I save myself and I am good at counting so I enjoy this.”

A marketing team is busy promoting the credit union and encouraging people to sign up.

Zoe Carroll said: “It is our job to welcome people, make posters and encourage people to save not spend.”

Ellie Dunn added: “We have been putting posters in shops promoting it and making letters.”

Demi Robertson, who is schools' development officer with Tail O' The Bank, has been impressed by the pupils.

She said: “We currently have eight primary school and three high schools and are trying to encourage other schools to take part,

“They have all been fabulous and so well organised.

“The pupils are good at everything, they are so clever and great at encouraging people to get involved.”

The credit union is open to pupils, their families, staff and members of the local community.

Anyone interested in taking part is invited to attend at St Francis' Primary on any Friday morning between 8.30am and 9.30am.
