THE world famous Waverley is steaming towards a glorious comeback with the announcement that the new boilers desperately needed to save the iconic ship have now been ordered.

A river of donations to rescue the famous Clyde paddler has flowed since her operators declared just two months ago that she needed the maritime equivalent of open heart surgery.

Love for a vessel which has given joy and unforgettable memories to millions of daytrippers seems to know no bounds as a mammoth crew of wellwishers has come forward to give what they can.

Now enough money towards a target of £2.3 million has materialised to allow non-profit company Waverley Excursions to place an order for the required hardware to ensure she sails again.

General manager Paul Semple said: "Thanks to the initial donations received towards our 'Boiler Refit Appeal' we have placed an order and paid the deposit for two new boilers to be built for Waverley.

"This is just the first vital step in returning Waverley to steam and I am extremely grateful to everyone who has donated to the appeal so far as they have allowed us to progress plans quickly."

The boilers will be built by Cochrane Limited in Annan, Dumfries-shire, for delivery early next year.

Waverley's entire 2019 summer cruising season had to be scrapped as hopes that repairs to her existing boiler units would be enough were dashed.

Several other boiler room components are also to be replaced as part of a major investment to ensure that the grand old ship — which entered service in 1947 — can sail on 'for at least another 20 years'.

The work required to remove her famous red, white and black funnels, as well as a large section of decking, will take several months to complete if full funding can be secured.

Mr Semple said: "We will only be able to install the new boilers if we continue to receive further donations and support from a variety of sources.

"The response to the appeal so far has demonstrated that many people around the UK and beyond wish to see the world's last seagoing paddle steamer saved.

"Our vision is to see a rejuvenated Waverley return next season to help celebrate the Scottish year of Coasts and Waters 2020.

"However, we will require ongoing help and support to achieve this vision."

Donations to the Boiler Refit Appeal can be made online at www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk or by texting STEAM £20 TO 70085.

All donations made directly to Waverley Excursions will be recorded on a 'Donor Wall' onboard the vessel.
