A FUN run through Port Glasgow will return in 2020, it's been confirmed.

Organisers of the annual Port 10k race say it will be back next year following another successful event last month.

A total of 225 runners signed up for the 2019 run, held on June 16.

It started and finished at Coronation Park, taking in Kingston Dock, the town centre, Glasgow Road and Kelburn along the way.

The furthest entrant was from Connecticut in the USA.

It was the second consecutive Port 10k and organisers say they are now going for the hat-trick.

Councillor Chris Curley, who helps organise the race, said: "I hope everyone enjoyed the event.

"Well done to all the runners, volunteers and supporters.

"Thank you again to everyone and see you in 2020."

On the day, Morton first team player Chris Millar and Inverclyde MSP Stuart McMillan, who both grew up in Port Glasgow, were on hand to cheer on the athletes and helped present medals at the end.

As the Ton midfielder got the race underway, Mr McMillan, the Scottish Parliament piper, gave a rendition of The Proclaimers' '500 Miles' on the bagpipes.

The pair were joined by Morton mascot Cappie the Cat as well as MP Ronnie Cowan and councillors Elizabeth Robertson and Graeme Brooks.

Mr Curley said: "We were lucky with the weather this year. "A great thanks to all the people who helped to marshal, helped with timekeeping and giving out the goodies this year - without them the Port Glasgow 10k would not be able to go ahead. "A special mention must go to PC Ian Deacon who guided the runners across the bottom of the Clune Brae with such efficiency."

The organisers have also thanked sponsors Lidl, River Clyde Homes, Terrace Attire, Tunnock's and Councillor Jim MacLeod, and Riverside Inverclyde for donating the trophies for the fastest male and female respectively.
