BRANCHTON Community Centre is tackling child poverty with an action plan to help families during the holidays.

The facility has teaming up with Inverclyde Council's education Attainment Challenge Fund team to run free activity sessions three days a week with music, dancing, arts and crafts all included.

Families can then sit down for a healthy lunch delivered to the centre from the school kitchens.

The hard working team are also setting up clothing banks, a tool lending scheme, community fridges and they run their own playscheme throughout the holidays.

Branchton Community Centre's Carol McEwan, who is running the sessions, said: "We have tried to make sure that every single day there is something different, a new activity for families.

"We have been really busy so far.

"I am always trying to think of ways that we can help the community.

"For instance if you are doing DIY in the house and you need something I am looking at a tool lending service.

"We'll do anything we can do to help families in the holidays."

The centre works closely with other projects to run its community fridge which gives families another helping hand.

Centre manager Willie Wilson said: "We are working with the council but we are also putting in our own resources.

"We have a summer playscheme with trips for the youngsters too and have a lot going on in here."
